Having co-founded one of Japan’s most revered underground groups, Boredoms, in the mid-‘80s, almost legendary guitarist Tabata Mitsuru has been a prominent figure in the outer reaches of his country’s music scene ever since.

Via his stints in equally influential, highly prolific and inspiring groups over the subsequent years, such as Zeni Geva and Acid Mothers Temple, his own input has been (dis)coloured by all from punk and industrial music, through psychedelia, folk and krautrock, to just about everything the avant-garde and improvised music have touched. Using these touchstones as his cue, he has moulded a style, or even sometimes anti-style, of playing that only essentially arrives from a combination of hard work, drained emotions, maxed-out energy and singular vision.

Open-minded, enthusiastic and never one to baulk from a new challenge, Tabata Mitsuru has also been found collaborating with many other artists over the years, has an extensive discography to lean on should ever a moment of self-doubt trouble him, and even found time enough to embark on a haphazard yet always well-greased solo career that commenced in the mid-1990s.

With a career than now spans almost three decades, this man remains as restless and impassioned as not only his guitar work but practically all the music he has turned his hand to during them. And whilst those cues that initially impacted on it may still, only occasionally, rise hydra-headed from whatever sonic stew he’s magically and mysteriously stirring, what he has ultimately achieved is reaching that point where everything he touches has become distinctly his own.

One of Japan’s leading artists in those, let’s face it, better and more interesting realms and, additionally, an artist of the highest calibre on a global scale.

Completely lacking in pretence, Tabata Mitsuru is one of the very few who can take his audience on an incredible journey into a Great Beyond where, unlike Conrad’s protaganist Kurtz’s voyage into the heart of darkness, there is a return ticket.

TIME LINE

1965: born in Kyoto.

1982: while in high school in Kyoto, started to play guitar in his first band SANAGI. SANAGI was picked up in compilation LP from major label in Japan.

1984-87: joined NOIZUNZURIE, an avant-gard rock band that plays their own interpretations of Japanese folk songs and noh music. NOIZUNZURIE released two albums from Japanese independent labels.

1986: founded BOREDOMS with Yamatsuka Eye a.k.a. Yamantaka Eye. left the group after only appearing on debut single "Anal By Anal".

1987: formed heavy psychedelic band LENINGRAD BLUES MACHINE.

1988: joined ZENI GEVA. Released "Maximum Love & Fuck" (LP/nux (JP))

1989: ZENI GEVA Released "Maximum Money" (CD/Pathological (UK))

1991: ZENI GEVA Recorded "Total Castration" engineered by STEVE ALBINI in Chicago. Live debut in USA (Chicago, Madison, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco) with support from MELVINS, NEUROSIS, PAIN TEENS.

1992: ZENI GEVA & STEVE ALBINI recorded "Nai-Ha" in Tokyo. ZENI GEVA & ALBINI had live together inTokyo & Osaka. ZENI GEVA toured in USA.

1993: ZENI GEVA recorded "Desire For Agony" with ALBINI in Chicago. toured in USA.

1994: ZENI GEVA toured in Europe (more than 40 shows in Germany (inc. POP-KOMM), Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Holland (inc. VPRO), Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and England). played at JOHN PEEL SESSION (BBC).

1995: ZENI GEVA recorded "Freedom Bondage" in France. played with SHELLAC in Chicago.
toured in Europe 2 month. played at JOHN PEEL SESSION (BBC) again. toured in Australia and New Zealand for the first time.

1996: recorded and released TABATA's 1st solo 7inch "Children Of Woods" from Fourth Dimension Records (UK).
ZENI GEVA toured in USA with BLAKE FLEMING (drummer from ex-DAZZLING KILLMEN). radio session at WFMU & KFJC.
toured in USA again, and in Europe (including Norway, Poland, Czech, Slovenia, Croatia & Portugal) with new drummer, MASATAKA FUJIKAKE.

1997: recorded and released TABATA's 2nd solo 7inch "Hardcore Space" from Apartment Records (Norway)
ZENI GEVA toured in Australia again and plays at "Livid" festival in Brisbane.

1998: released TABATA's 1st solo CD "Brainsville" from Elsie & Jack Recordings (UK/USA)
ZENI GEVA recorded KRAFTWERK's "Sex Object" for a tribute album to KRAFTWERK "Muisque Non Stop" on Toshiba EMI (Japan).

2000: ZENI GEVA supports the first Japan Tour of NEUROSIS. Recorded "10,000 Light Years" in Chicago by STEVE ALBINI, and did a live radio session at KFJC and live show with NEUROSIS at the Great American Hall in SF.

2001: "10,000 Light Years / ZENI GEVA" was released.
TABATA guitar solo live toured in Europe with other unit MONSTER DVD.
TABATA played guitar solo at festival on BATOFAR in Paris.

2002: In April, ZENI GEVA is invited to play at the "All Tomorrow's Parties U.K." and also a few shows in Switzerland, France and Belgium. TABATA played guitar solo at festival on BATOFAR in Paris.
formed Guilty Connector Und Tabata with Guilty Connector.

2003: released "TABATA guitar solo Live In Europe 2001" (CDR).
released "Guilty Connector Und Tabata" from Even Stilte (France)

2004: released split 7inch "Slowburn With Makoto Kawabata & Mitsuru Tabata" from Apartment Records (Norway)
"Last Nanosecond: Live in Geneva / ZENI GEVA" was released.
formed AMAZON SALIVA with HIDE (Ultra Bide) and NANI (BOGULTA, ex ZUINOSIN).

2005: joined ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO. toured in Europe and USA.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO played with DAMO Suzuki in All Tomorrow's Parties (UK).

2006: ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO toured in Europe.

2007: released solo CDs "La Vie Electrique: Last Exit To Brainsville" from Elsie & Jack Recordings (UK/USA), "Lumrapideco" from Utech Records (USA), "We All Gonna Face The Rising Sun" from Ruby Red Editora (portugal)
formed 20 GUILDERS with Suzuki Junzo.

2008: released "Guilty C.,The* And Tabata Mitsuru" (2nd CD of Guilty Connector Und Tabata).

2009: ZENI GEVA toured in Europe

2010: released 1st song Album "LUCIFER" from Japanese label map-compare notes. was produced by KAWABATA Makoto.
TABATA Festival was holded at Enban Jamboree in Shibuya.
formed GREEN FLAMES with NARITA Munehiro (HIGH RISE) and YAMAMOTO Tatsuhisa (ds). later drummer changed to UJIIE Yuro (HIGH RISE).
ZENI GEVA toured in UK. played in Super Sonic Festival.

2011: Alien's Social Dance Party (formed with FUJIKAKE Masataka in 2002) released 2nd Album "MORSE".

2012: joined ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. toured in USA and Europe.
